Circle believes in ‘Atheist’

Dark comedy stars Campbell Scott

Circle in the Square Theater has joined Culture Project as a producer of the Off Broadway run of “The Atheist,” a darkly comic solo show starring Campbell Scott.

Written by Ronan Noone and directed by Justin Waldman, the play follows crooked reporter Augustine Early, whose unscrupulous pursuit of a page-one political scandal threatens to backfire on him.

Previously seen at Boston’s Huntington Theater and the Williamstown Theater Festival, the production begins performances Oct. 7 at Culture Project’s temporary home, the Barrow Street Theater, with an official opening set for Oct. 12.

Circle in the Square has a long history with Scott’s family, having worked with his parents, George C. Scott and Colleen Dewhurst, in the 1950s and ’60s, notably on the 1963 Off Broadway production of “Desire Under the Elms.”

With the Circle in the Square Theater on Broadway currently tenantless, the Culture Project collaboration raises the possibility of a Rialto transfer for “The Atheist.”
