Broadway duo try on ‘Kinky Boots’

Roth, Luftig adapt film as musical

Broadway producers Daryl Roth (“Proof”) and Hal Luftig (“Legally Blonde”) have begun development on a new tuner based on the 2006 pic “Kinky Boots.”

Still in its embryonic stage, the musical has no composer, lyricist or book writer yet attached, although Jerry Mitchell is on board to helm, according to Luftig.

Mitchell got involved equally early in the development of 2007 musical “Blonde,” another screen-to-stage adaptation, which he directed and choreographed after assisting in the selection of that creative team.

The 2005 British film “Boots” centers on a man who recruits a drag queen (played onscreen by Chiwetel Ejiofor) to help him reinvent his family’s failing shoe factory with a new line of fierce footwear for female impersonators. Pic was little seen in the U.S., where it was released in 2006 and logged a cumulative gross of about $1.8 million.
