Producer Barry Josephson, whose screen credits include “Enchanted” and TV skein “Bones,” will produce the Off Broadway preem of solo show “Basic Training” this fall.
Production is written and performed by Kahlil Ashanti, who bases the play on his experiences in the U.S. Air Force as part of its Tops in Blue entertainment troupe.
Show originated in 2004, playing in L.A. and at Fringe fests in Montreal, Vancouver and Edinburgh, winning awards at all three.
Veteran Off Broadway helmer Hal Brooks (“No Child …,” “Thom Pain”) recently joined the production as a supervisor. Tyler Micoleau designs the lights.
Capitalized in the low six figures, “Basic Training” is produced by Josephson, Erich Jungwirth (producing director of Soho Think Tank) and Richard Jordan (“Nine Parts of Desire”). Show begins previews at the Barrow Street Theater Sept. 26 ahead of an Oct. 13 opening.
Josephson is also developing a film version of the story and hopes the Off Broadway run will help drum up interest. “It will be a great showcase to bring talent to,” he said.
