Alan Wasser Associates will handle the general management duties for the 2009 Tony Awards, while Elizabeth I. McCann is no longer attached as managing producer.
The Tony contract for Broadway producer McCann (“Hair,” “Passing Strange”) and business partner Joey Parnes was not renewed. McCann had been managing producer since 2001.
Over the last several years, the annual CBS broadcast of the Tony ceremony has seen ratings decline steadily. The 2008 edition, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, didn’t pick up many viewers, but the broadcast won praise from legiters for its attempts to incorporate nods to the entire Broadway landscape (as opposed to just the nominees of the season).
General management credits for Wasser on Broadway include “Les Miserables,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Miss Saigon.”
Tony telecast will continue under the tutelage of producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss/White Cherry Entertainment. Tonys are administered jointly by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing.
