Press agent Jeanne L. Mizzy dies

Public relations vet worked in TV, music

Former press agent Jeanne L. Mizzy died Oct. 27 in Broomall, Penn. from respiratory complications from lung cancer. She was 81.

She began her career at WMRN Radio in her hometown of Marion, Ohio, where she worked with Rod Serling early in his career in radio.

After graduating from Ohio State U., Mizzy moved to New York, where she began working in public relations. She went on to work as a press agent for Kay Norton, John McClain (drama critic for the New York Journal American), and Broadway press agent Eddie Jaffe.

Jaffe’s Times Square office worked with clients from total unknowns to then-rising stars like Marlon Brando. She also served as an assistant to theatrical and movie producer Jed Harris, typing the scripts for the Broadway show, “A Child of Fortune” and the movie, “Operation Mad Ball.”

She branched out, first to TV, serving as publicist for the children’s TV show, “The Adventures of Danny Dee,” and then to the music industry, working at MGM Records. Her job there included clearing rights and processing contracts for recording artists such as Connie Francis, Artie Shaw and Billie Holiday.

In addition to her work in the entertainment industry, in 1955 and 1956, she assisted special counsel Ernest A. Mitler on investigations and hearings concerning the black market in interstate adoptions. After returning to Marion in 1974, she pursued a second career as a librarian until her retirement in 1990.

Mizzy’s ex-husband A. Robert Mizzy, formerly married to Gypsy Rose Lee, died in 1987.

In addition to her daughter, former theatrical lighting designer Danianne Mizzy, she is survived by one sister, one brother, and two granddaughters.

Donations may be made to Jefferson Hospice and Home Care Foundation, #401 Radnor Corporate Center, 100 Matson Ford Road, Radnor, PA 19087.
