TOKYO — IMJ Entertainment and indie production outfit Dub have launched a pic production unit, Smoke. The deal was approved by IMJE’s board last November, but not announced until Tuesday. Smoke has 22.24 million yen ($207,850) in capital, with IMJE and Dub each supplying half.

Smoke has inked a production and talent agency deal with helmer Yoshihiro Nakamura, whose black comedy “The Coin Locker of the Duck and Drake” set a first-day attendance record when it opened at Tokyo’s Ebisu Garden Place theater on Nov. 27. It has also signed scripter Kenichi Suzuki, who penned “The Coin Locker of the Duck and Drake” and the 2002 horror hit “Dark Water.”

Producer Yasushi Udagawa, topper of Dub, serves as Smoke’s CEO. His credits include “Coin Locker” and the 2006 Makoto Tanaka horror pic “Rain Town” (Ame no machi).

IMJE has been active in producing and repping leading helmers and scripters since its launch in 2004 and now has nine under contract, including helmers Isshin Inudo, Kentaro Otani and Sabu.
