Berlin fest, Frankfurt Book Fair reteam

Duo collaborate again to stage Berlinale Day

BERLIN — The Berlin Film Festival and the Frankfurt Book Fair are partnering again to stage Berlinale Day on Thursday, the literary event’s sidebar dedicated to screen adaptations.

It is the fourth time the duo have collaborated on the sidebar, which aims to strengthenrelationships between the publishing and film worlds, and promotegreater exchange between producers, publishers and literary agents.

Three lit adaptations from February’s Berlin lineup will be showcased, and there will be workshops for producers looking to acquire book rights.

Pics screening are Belgium helmer Nic Balthazar’s “Ben X,” based on his own novel, about an autistic teenager who escapes reality by playing videogames; “Boy A,” John Crowley’s adaptation of Jonathan Trigell’s book about a young ex-con who committed murder as a child; and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood,” based on the novel “Oil!” by Upton Sinclair.

This year’s workshop is titled “Whose Right(s)?” and includes panelists such as literary agents Peter Riva of the U.S.’ Intl. Transactions and Silvia Brunelli of Italy’s Nabu Intl. Literary Agency, as well as Berlin film producer Wenka von Mikulicz from Boje Buck Prods.

Also to be discussed will be the legal aspects of adapting novels to the screen, including optioning rights and cooperating with agents.

Berlinale Day also includes meetings between producers and publishing reps as well as a tour of the fair, which runs Oct. 15-19.

The collaboration will continue at the next Berlinale fest, Feb. 5-15, when the book fair will have its Books at Berlinale stand at the European Film Market and will present promising literary material at the Berlinale Co-Production Market.
