BRUSSELS — Belgium’s international animation festival, Anima, unspools Feb. 1-9 with a new competition for adverts and music videos. The aim is to give greater exposure to the animation talent that works in these sectors.
“These films are often a kind of laboratory for new images and new content,” fest co-director Doris Cleven said. “We thought it would be interesting to create this new competition to give them status, to show them and to focus public attention on them.”
Anima’s guest of honor from the world of commercials will be U.S. animator Pes, who has made spots for Nike, Smirnoff, Bacardi and Diesel among others. His retrospective also features his notorious short “Roof Sex,” complete with love-crazed armchairs.
Fest opens with “Peur(s) du noir,” an adult-oriented compilation feature on fears of the dark. Contributing artists include Blutch, Charles Burns, Marie Caillou, Pierre di Sciullo, Lorenzo Mattotti and Richard McGuire. Etienne Robial coordinates.

Meanwhile the kids’ opener is “Max & Co,” a computer-treated puppet animation by the Swiss brothers Samuel and Frederic Guillaume.
As well as giving national and international prizes, Anima is one of the 10 European fests to nominate shorts for the Cartoon d’Or award.
