Riba to leave San Sebastian

Masson, De Solorzano join festival

MADRID — The San Sebastian Film Festival has tapped film critic Alex Masson as its delegate in France and TV producer Mercedes Ortiz de Solorzano as head of relations for Latin American cinema.

Fest has also brought on board vet film exec Marichu Corugedo to co-ordinate the award granted by tech companies in Madrid as part of the Films in Progress initiative.

The appointments coincide with the departure of Jose Maria Riba, who has held a wide range of positions at the festival over the past 27 years.

Riba, a journalist at the France Presse news agency in Paris, was a member of the festival management for many years. In recent editions of the fest, Riba, one of the event’s most familiar faces, co-ordinated the festival’s rapidly growing industry initiatives.

One of Riba’s biggest achievements at San Sebastian was the creation of its Films in Progress showcase, which screens rough cuts of Latin American films seeking completion finance. Films in Progress has showcased many films that have gone on to earn competish berths and prizes at the world’s major fests.
