Kutcher, Leigh set for ‘Spread’

Duo to star in MacKenzie's indie sex satire

Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Jason Leigh will star in the indie sex comedy “Spread,” which Kutcher’s Katalyst banner is producing.

Story chronicles the adventures of a serial womanizer (Kutcher); Leigh will play a thwarted lover. Jason Dean Hall penned the screenplay in his feature film debut.

Scottish helmer David MacKenzie, who is known for such sexually charged dramas as “Young Adam,” “Hallam Foe” and “Asylum,” is directing. Shooting begins later this month in Los Angeles.

“I am exceptionally excited to be shooting in Hollywood, but with an outsider’s eye,” MacKenzie said.

Katalyst’s Jason Goldberg and Peter Morgan are producing. Barbarian Films’ Aaron Kaufman exec produces.

“Spread,” which was put together quickly, beats out of the gate a similarly themed project that Katalyst is developing for Columbia Pictures as a Kutcher starring vehicle. That untitled project centers on an L.A. florist who specializes in orchestrating makeups, breakups and hookups throughout the city.

Kutcher’s upcoming films include 20th Century Fox’s romantic comedy “What Happens in Vegas.”

He is repped by Endeavor and Untitled Entertainment.

MacKenzie is handled by Endeavor.
