Kanbar kicks off First Run festival

Event offers 105 student films

New York U’s Kanbar Institute of Film and Television opens their 66th annual First Run Film Fest with more than 105 student films in competish for $50,000 dollars in cash awards.

This year’s crop features a bevy of coming of age tales and relationship dramas in genres ranging from conventional to experimental as well as doc and animation.

Fest runs from April 10-14 at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Film Center in the East Village. Tix are $5, less for students. Post fest, finalist films and vids get a Hollywood showcase at Directors Guild of American’s HQ in early June.

Notable Kanbar alums include Joel Coen, Amy Heckerling, Ang Lee, Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese.
