IFC Films to serve ‘Playa’

Film unit picks up rights to ping pong pic

IFC Films has picked up domestic distribution rights to Jessica Yu’s “Ping Pong Playa.”

Comedy, co-written by Yu and Jimmy Tsai, who also plays the lead, preemed in Gotham as the closing night pic at the Asian American Film Festival.

Yu nabbed the 1997 Oscar for her doc short “Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O’Brien.”

“When the opportunity came along to work with Jessica again, we could not let it pass,” IFC Entertainment prexy Jonathan Sehring said. “Jimmy Tsai gives an unforgettable performance as C-dub.”

Story follows street smart Christopher “C-dub” Wang, a suburbanite with untenable pro basketball dreams who unhappily finds himself obligated to take over his mother’s pingpong class and defend the family’s athletic dynasty.

Pic marks Yu’s debut narrative feature. She previously helmed docs, shorts and episodes of “The West Wing” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”
