‘I Love You, Man’ to open SXSW

Dreamworks comedy tops annual film festival

The SXSW Film Festival will open with the world preem of the Dreamworks romantic comedy “I Love You, Man” on March 13.

Pic continues the fest’s knack for landing big preems, making it the go-to event for studios wanting a slice of the hipster demographic. Sony unveiled “21” as the fest opener this year.

“It’s great to continue in the tradition of “Knocked Up, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Harold and Kumar,” said SXSW Film Producer Janet Pierson.

Directed by John Hamburg (“Along Came Polly”) from a script by Hamburg and Larry Levin, “I Love You, Man” stars Paul Rudd as an about-to-be-married man with no guy friends. In a rush to find a best man, he quickly bonds with Jason Segel. Rashida Jones also stars, and her father, Quincy, is giving the keynote speech at SXSW Music.

Dreamworks will release “I Love You, Man” on March 20.

The fest previously announced its first round of speakers including IMDb.com founder Col Needham, producer Jan Harlan and a discussion between helmers Todd Haynes and Richard Linklater.

SXSW Film Conference and Festival runs March 13-21 in Austin.
