Debut directors dominate Sarajevo

10 features to compete for lucrative top award

LONDON — With tyro directors dominating, the Sarajevo Film Festival announced the competition lineup for its 14th edition billed as “the most exciting program yet.”

With 10 features competing for a top Heart of Sarajevo award worth nearly $40,000, six of them debuts, program director Elma Tataragic said finding top quality films from the Balkans and region was no longer the challenge it once was.

“Eight years ago when we started the Regional Program, focused more or less on the same region as the current competition program, our region was not producing such good films,” Tataragic said in a statement.

“That is a tiny secret I am now free to share with everyone. There were exceptions, of course, but they were so few that I barely managed to collect and show seven shorts and seven features.”

The emergence of a new, strong wave of young filmmakers had turned the situation around and now the Balkans region was one that was firmly in the international limelight, she added.

This year’s competition lineup should allow that to be demonstrated, she said, with films from noted directors and newcomers too.

The feature competition line up is:

“We’ve Never Been to Venice,” directed by tyro Blaz Kutin, Slovenia;

“Autumn,” debut, Ozcan Alper, Turkey;

“Buick Riviera,” Goran Rusinovic, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina;

“Dot,” Dervis Zaim, Turkey;

“Girls,” debut, Anna Faur, Hungary;

“Kino Lika,” Dalibor Matanic, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina;

“March,” debut, Handl Klaus, Austria;

“The Fourth Man,” debut, Dejan Zecevic, Serbia;

“Delta,” Korenl Mundruczo, Hungary;

and “My Marlon and Brando,” debut, Huseyin Karabey, Turkey.

A short film competition with a 16 strong lineup from the Balkans and wider region will screen films from emerging new directors.

The 14th edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival runs Aug. 15-23 in the Bosnian and Herzegovina capital.
