‘Class’ wins Film by the Sea

Dardennes take lifetime achievement award

BRUSSELS — French Oscar hopeful “Entre les murs” (The Class) has taken top prize at the Film by the Sea festival in Vlissingen, Holland.

Now in its 10th year, the international fest spotlights literary adaptations on screen.

Laurent Cantet’s schoolroom drama is based on a book by former teacher Francois Begaudeau, who also plays a leading role in the film.

Pic was chosen by a jury of writers, actors and directors from 10 competing features. They commended the film’s radical style, in particular its combination of rapid editing with moments of calm.

Fest also paid tribute to Belgian helmers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne with a lifetime achievement award.

Luc Dardenne collected the award Sunday, accompanied by Arta Dobroshi, who plays the title role in their latest pic “Le Silence de Lorna.”
