Church, Shue, Leo to star in ‘McKay’

Goldberger to write, direct Animus' indie drama

Thomas Haden Church is starring in Animus Films’ indie drama “Don McKay” with Elisabeth Shue, Melissa Leo, M. Emmet Walsh and Keith David.

The $5 million project, which began shooting last week west of Boston, has a Screen Actors Guild waiver.

Jim Young (“Voltron”) is producing; Church’s producing partner, David Denney, co-produces, and Church exec produces.

Jake Goldberger, who penned teen thriller “Homecoming,” is directing from his own script. Story centers on a man haunted by a tragedy that forced him to flee his hometown 25 years earlier who returns when he finds his long-lost love is dying — and is then caught in a web of confusion, deceit and murder.

Church and Goldberger have been attempting to develop “McKay” ever since Church broke out in “Sideways.”

“This has been a real passion project for me,” he told Daily Variety. “Once we were able to get the financing, the cast came together very quickly.”

Church is set to star next in “Big Eyes,” opposite Kate Hudson. He most recently worked on “All About Steve” for Fox and Paramount’s “Nowhereland,” opposite Eddie Murphy.

Animus is in post-production on “Homecoming,” starring Mischa Barton and Jessica Stroup.
