‘Blue’ glues development prize

Film picks up award at Netherlands festival

BRUSSELS — “Shocking Blue,” a tale of childhood friendship in the Dutch tulip fields, has won the Kodak NPP Development Prize at the Netherlands Production Platform. Event is part of the Netherlands Film Festival, running in Utrecht Sept. 24-Oct. 3.

Worth E5,000 euros ($7,270), the prize goes to producer Waterland Film to further develop the project. Mark de Cloe will direct, from a script by Celine Linssen.

The jury commended the helmer’s plans for lush visuals, contrasting with the unsophisticated setting and characters.

Other nominations from the six Dutch projects in the platform were “Sonny Boy” from Shooting Star Film Co., with Maria Peters helming; and “A Kronstadt Tale” from Van Lieshout Film Prods. and Another Film. Ben van Lieshout directs from another script by Linssen.

Earlier in the fest, kids’ adventure “The Seven of Daran — The Battle of Pareo Rock” collected the Utrecht City Film Prize. Directed by first-timer Lourens Blok, pic is about a black girl and a white boy who try to stop a tribal war in Africa, with the help of a talking giraffe.

“Battle” is first in series of seven linked adventure pics planned by producer AAA Pictures. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributes locally. Cinemavault handles international sales.
