2929 options rights to ‘Serena’

Ron Rash novel hits stores this fall

Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban’s 2929 Prods. has preemptively optioned rights to “Serena,” the newest novel by Ron Rash, which HarperCollins subsid Ecco will release this fall.

Nick Wechsler brought the project to 2929 and will produce in tandem with Wagner, Cuban and production prexy Marc Butan. Deal is valued at the mid-high six figures, according to an insider.

Story concerns a Depression-era logging magnate and his wife who face off against land conservationists’ attempts to turn their land into a national park.

“I was drawn to the dynamic characters and unique setting in Ron’s book,” Wechsler said.

“We hope we can continue to be a go-to company for formidable filmmakers and esteemed literary projects,” Butan said.

Rash’s latest collection of short stories, “Chemistry and Other Stories,” was a PEN/Faulkner finalist.
