A killer repping an ugly, unresolved and nearly forgotten chapter of post-WWII history confronts a cynical, amoral Everyman in “Landscape No. 2,” the sophomore feature from Slovenian helmer-scribe Vinko Moderndorfer. Played realistically yet with a wink to Grand Guignol theatrics, this audacious, superbly crafted, contempo horror pic spiced with humorous hardcore action could surpass the notoriety of his feature debut “Suburbs.” Due to open domestically in October, it should click best in European markets open to the metaphorical content (and not scared by extreme sex and violence), before finding cult status on homevid.

When petty thief Sergej (Marko Mandic) takes some documents along with a valuable painting from the home of a former communist general (Janez Skof), he doesn’t realize the papers implicate highly placed persons in the post-war executions of Nazi collaborators. Soon, a former secret service “exterminator” (Slobodan Custic) is on his trail, making mincemeat of sweet g.f. Magda (Barbara Cerar), gay archivist Damjan (Jaka Lah), and spoiled sexpot Jasna (Maja Martin Merljak). Perfs are tops across the board, supported by a tidy tech package led by the ironic lensing of ace Serbian d.p. Dusan Jokimovic.
