Annemarie Jacir

While getting a first project off the ground is rarely easy, Palestinian helmer Jacir had to endure more than most to get her debut feature, “Salt of This Sea,” onto the bigscreen. Pic, which preemed in Un Certain Regard at Cannes this year, tells the story of a young Palestinian-American woman visiting her ancestral home for the first time. Jacir, who decided to shoot on location in the Palestinian Territories, had to play hide-and-seek with authorities for most of the production. She also found herself banned from entering her hometown shortly after she finished lensing, meaning she couldn’t join her crew — which included an ambulance driver, a lawyer, a radio DJ and a street sign painter — for the pic’s local preem in Ramallah.
