The U.K. leads the race in the nominations for the 36th Intl. Emmy Awards, announced at Mipcom in Cannes on Monday by the Intl. Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

It scored eight out of the 40 noms in 10 categories, followed by Brazil with five, Argentina and Japan with four each, and China and Denmark with three each.

Some 16 countries are in the race including first-timers Jordan and Peru.

The first hopefuls in the new telenovela category are “The Invasion Igtiyah” (Jordan), “Lalola” (Argentina), “One Night of Love” (Russia) and “Tropical Paradise” (Brazil). 

The Academy also will present the IEmmy Founders Award to Dick Wolf, creator and executive producer of “Law & Order” for his creative accomplishments over 25 years.

The Directorate Award will go to Phoenix Satellite Television founder and chairman, Liu Changle, for growing Phoenix into a multimedia empire broadcasting in Mandarin in over 150 countries,

Founded in 1969, the Intl. Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is the largest organization of global broadcasters, with over 600 members from nearly 70 countries and over 400 companies.

The Academy recognizes excellence in TV programming produced outside of the United States, and it presents the award to programs in 10 categories: arts, actress, actor, children & young people, comedy, documentary, drama series, non-scripted entertainment, telenovelas and TV movie/miniseries.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on Nov. 24 at the Hilton New York Hotel the day after the two-day IEmmy World Television Festival wraps.
