Normally low on glamour, San Sebastian has turned up its own star quotient a few watts. “Tropic Thunder” will be tubthumped by Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr., while Meryl Streep and homeboy Antonio Banderas are being honored with Donostia Awards. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem look set to present “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” with Woody Allen. Jonathan Demme, Amos Gitai, Mirtha Ibarra and Joan Chen chair the four juries.

San Sebastian’s first four days are easygoing, but watch out for Sales Office happy hours (which run all week), and a Mercosur-EU press conference Sept. 21.

Things heat up Sept. 22: Cinema in Motion unspools, as does a Spain/ Colombia co-production forum; other events include the unveiling of Madrid Studios, the Las Palmas fest hosts a pour, and Blighty’s Screen South pitches projects. On Sept. 23, Andalusia holds an Audiovisual Day, and a two-day Films in Progress program begins.

Basque Cinema Day rolls Sept. 24. On Sept. 25, there’s a Pyrenean Film Forum and Sept. 25, Spanish producers association FAPAE topper Pedro Perez and CRTVE head Luis Fernandez deliver their state of the biz address.

European Film Promotion presents Europe Distributors: Up Next! on Sept. 26, and a Europa Distribution meeting, which goes into Sept. 27.
