‘Slumdog,’ ‘Happy’ top Satellites

DeWitt, Shannon snag supporting statues

Fox Searchlight’s “Slumdog Millionaire” and Miramax’s “Happy-Go-Lucky” topped the International Press Academy’s 13th annual Satellite Awards over the weekend.

“Happy-Go-Lucky” star Sally Hawkins added to her kudos collection with a win for comedic actress, while fellow Brit Ricky Gervais was named best comedic actor for “Ghost Town.”

On the dramatic side, the IPA named Angelina Jolie best actress for “Changeling” and Richard Jenkins best actor for “The Visitor.”

Rosemarie DeWitt and Michael Shannon earned supporting statues for “Rachel Getting Married” and “Revolutionary Road,” respectively.

The group chose Disney/Pixar’s “Wall-E” as Best Animated Film while Italy’s “Gomorrah” was named Best Foreign Language Film. “Anita O’Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer” and “Man on Wire” tied for Best Documentary.

“Slumdog” also took home trophies for director Danny Boyle and composer A.R. Rahman.

Writer-director Thomas McCarthy won the best original screenplay award for “The Visitor” while “Frost/Nixon” scribe Peter Morgan won best adapted screenplay.

On the television side, Showtime was the big winner as “Dexter” and “State of the Union” took home top honors. “Union’s” Tracey Ullman and “True Blood’s” Anna Paquin earned acting awards along with “Weeds'” Justin Kirk and “Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston.

Last year’s Oscar winner “No Country for Old Men” was named the Best DVD of 2008.
