Sam Mendes

Director, 'Revolutionary Road'

There’s no doubt that Mendes’ theater background — which stretches from Britain to Broadway and has gathered Olivier and Tony awards along the way — stood him in good stead when his feature directorial debut, “American Beauty,” copped Oscar, Golden Globe and DGA wins. His latest film, “Revolutionary Road,” set in 1950s suburbia, is another portrait of an American marriage: One spouse wants to escape, whatever the cost, while the other fights to save what they have. Based on the Richard Yates novel, it stars Mendes’ wife, Kate Winslet.
