Ghent festival honors Howard’s music

Composer feted at World Soundtrack Awards

BRUSSELS — James Newton Howard garnered the title film composer of the year at the World Soundtrack AwardsSaturday night at the Ghent Film Festival in Belgium.

Howard got the nod for his work on “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Michael Clayton” and “I Am Legend.”

Dario Marianelli took the award for original score with “Atonement.”

Marc Streitenfeld was named discovery of the year for his work on “American Gangster.”

“Down to Earth,” performed by Peter Gabriel in the toon “Wall-E,” was named best original song written for a film. Gabriel wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the music with Thomas Newman.

Fest audiences loyally chose Flemish accordionist Tuur Florizoone for the public prize. “Moscow, Belgium,” for which he wrote the music, has been a huge local hit.

Award ceremony saw Angelo Badalamenti collect a lifetime achievement award, presented by Marianne Faithfull.

Evening rounded off with the Brussels Philharmonic performing music by Badalamenti, Marianelli, Florizoone and last year’s discoveries Andres Goldstein and Daniel Tarrab.
