LONDON — There were dark undercurrents to the “Dark Knight” premiere as the stars wore black in homage to the late Heath Ledger, while Christian Bale posed for photos with his wife Sibi Blazic despite the family-and-police drama that was brewing below the surface.
At Monday’s European premiere of the pic, few were aware of Bale’s drama, which came to light the next day when assertions of a physical altercation were revealed.
At the Odeon Leicester Square bow, Bale joined co-stars Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart and Maggie Gyllenhaal, all wearing black, while mobs of fans arrived dressed as theJoker and Batman.
For the preem, it was business as usual, with Caine saying he would “pay good money” to see a performance worthy of beating Ledger’s for the Oscar, and helmer Christopher Nolan stating it was “terrifically exciting to be back in London,” where much of the movie was shot.
On Tuesday, websites and wire services were filled with reports that Bale had met with police in central London to discuss allegations of a Sunday-night argument with his mother and sister that got physical at the Dorchester Hotel.
The police did not question the actor Monday because they did not want to interfere with the preem. Early the next morning, Bale turned himself into police, denied the allegations and was released on bail without being charged.
