Detective caper “La senal” nabbed 14 nominations for Argentina’s 56th Condor de Plata film awards.
The directing debut of actor Ricardo Darin (“Nine Queens”) nominations include film, director (it was co-directed by Martin Hodara, another freshman) as well as lead actor for Darin, supporting actress for Andrea Pietra and supporting actor for Diego Peretti.
Trailing with eight noms is hermaphrodite drama “XXY.” Novelist and scriptwriter Lucia Puenzo’s freshman directing effort is in contention for film, director and lead actress for Ines Efron. The drama, which is a contender for foreign Spanish-language film at Spain’s Goya Awards this year, is also in the running for a foreign-language Oscar nomination.
Julio Chavez is a contender for lead actor in “El otro” (The Other), a performance that won him a Silver Berlin Bear in 2007. The story of a man who takes on the identity of a dead man also fetched eight noms including film and director (Ariel Rotter).
The other eight-nom contender is Esteban Sapir’s sci-fi fantasy pic “La antena” (The Aerial), which is in the running for film and director.
The four will compete for picture along with Ana Katz’s “La novia errante” (The Wandering Bride), the tale of a girl moving on after being dumped by her boyfriend.
Foreign pic noms went to Corneliu Porumboiu’s “12:08 Bucharest,” Clint Eastwood’s “Letters From Iwo Jima,” Abdellatif Kechiche’s “The Secret of the Grain,” Cristian Mungiu’s “4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days” and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s “The Lives of Others.”
Winners will be announced in March or April.
Considered the country’s most prestigious kudos, the Condor de Plata awards have been presented by Argentina’s Film Writers Assn. since 1942.
