Fifteen feels like a well-rounded number, and that’s exactly how many Oscar nominations Meryl Streep will have earned if she’s tapped for her role in “Doubt.”
While she earns nominations as easily as Tiger Woods wins golf tournaments, Streep hasn’t taken home an Oscar since 1983 with “Sophie’s Choice.” Those who have seen “Doubt” say Streep is mesmerizing as a nun who accuses a priest of child molestation.
Streep won’t approach Mount Oscar unopposed, of course. Anne Hathaway has stepped far from her “Princess Diaries” persona in “Rachel Getting Married,” and while many thought Angelina Jolie would get nominated for “A Mighty Heart” last year, her role this year in Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling” is generating awards heat.
Kate Winslet has received Oscar nominations for two of the last four years; she could land another with “Revolutionary Road.” Other names bantered about for lead actress include Cate Blanchett (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), Nicole Kidman (“Australia”), Kristin Scott Thomas (“I’ve Loved You So Long”) and Sally Hawkins (“Happy-Go-Lucky”).
On the supporting side, femmes most often mentioned for awards possibilities include Penelope Cruz (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”), Queen Latifah (“The Secret Life of Bees”) and Viola Davis (“Doubt”).
