Rainbow sets Singapore game unit

Studio to handle online design for 'Winx Club'

Italian animation company Rainbow is setting up a $16.5 million games studio in Singapore to handle design for a planned online world based on its cartoon franchise “Winx Club,” about five teenage fairies.

The series airs on Cartoon Network in Asia and targets tween girls, with 2 million registered users on its official website. Rainbow CEO Iginio Straffi said the studio will be its global HQ for its vidgame biz and will employ 100 full-time staff by 2011.

Lucasfilm is among those that have set up in Singapore, courted by the government, which aims to create 10,000 media-related jobs by 2015.
