CBS News is getting animated.

Eye has hired former “World News With Charles Gibson” head writer Josh Landis and Mitch Butler from ABC News to create a series of animated shorts dubbed “The Fast Draw,” which will explore major news stories of the day. The pair had done a handful of similar ani shorts for ABCNews.com during the past year, dubbed “The Quick Draw.”

“Fast Draw” segments will run on CBSNews.com and on various CBS News programs. Landis will also serve as a correspondent for CBS Newspath, the Eye’s satellite newsgathering service.

Landis had been with ABC News since 2001, starting as a scribe for “Good Morning America” before moving onto “World News Tonight With Peter Jennings.” He has also worked as a writer, producer, editor and photog for CNN, the National Science Foundation, Fox News and NBC’s now-defunct America’s Talking cabler.

Butler has worked as a cartoonist and animator for Discovery Channel and PBS, in addition to ABC News. He has served as a consultant to tech firms developing animation software and created graphics for blurbs for Coca-Cola, Hewlett-Packard, American Express and Pepsi.

“After working on traditional broadcasts for years, it’s extremely liberating to let the audience in on complex ideas by illustrating them in the simplest of terms,” Landis said. Added Butler: “Josh brings credibility, I bring chaos. He looks for relevant, I look for unique. Together, it works.”
