Suit against ‘Jenin’ filmmaker dismissed

Israeli court rules pic untruthful, but not slander

DUBAI- A lawsuit brought against Palestinian filmmaker Mohammed Bakri for slander by five Israeli soldiers featured in Bakri’s documentary “Jenin, Jenin,” has been dismissed by an Israeli judge.

The court ruled that the soldiers could not file the suit against Bakri because any slander that did occur was against an entire group rather than specific individuals.

Bakri’s film is about the Israeli army’s 2002 Operation Desert Shield military operation in a refugee camp in the Palestinian town of Jenin. The court did, however, rule that Bakri had incorrectly translated interviewee’s words in the English subtitles and had not sufficiently backed up claims that the Israeli army had committed war crimes.
