HONG KONG – Former Focus Films topper Daniel Yu has joined Beijing-based production and talent management group Chengtian (aka Orange Sky) as vice general manager of its Orange Sky Zhihong film and TV production subsidiary.
The appointment is effective Dec 1, with former GM Wang Wei moving to head a new film production subsidiary, Orange Sky Ying Hua.
According to Yu, in addition to overseeing the company’s day-to-day operations, his primary focus will be to strengthen Chengtian’s distribution platforms in China.
Yu was co-founder of October Pictures, a Hong Kong production and location services company which recently provided services for the Hong Kong shoot of “The Dark Knight.” Yu’s relocation to Beijing seven months ago gave October a mainland China base.
Yu will continue to work on a project-by-project basis with Ning Hao, the Chinese helmer whose hit “Crazy Stone,” emerged from the Focus First Cuts slate of low budget movies by lesser known directors from around Asia. Chengtian, which is part of a group of companies linking Japan’s Avex group and Hong Kong-based Golden Harvest, has a minority stake in Ning’s upcoming “Crazy Racer.”
Yu is also advising First Cuts Features, a new China-based outfit which, in a fashion similar to the Focus First Cuts concept, is producing a series of pics by young helmers.
