I just wanted to say that as a regional independent with three prints of “Australia” between our two locations, we’re over the moon with the results on the film. It’s comfortably the largest opening week numbers we’ve seen in several years outside of school holiday periods, and word of mouth is stellar. People just dont seem to understand why the critics have been so harsh towards the film and have put it down to the ‘tall poppy’ syndrome, and have clearly chosen to make their own mind up.
For comparison, our opening week grosses have been more than triple the opening week numbers for “Quantum of Solace” which is not surprising given regional audiences never really embrace the Hollywood hype on films like “Spiderman”, “Transformers”, and “X-Men” as readily as metropolitan audiences do.
It often frustrates me when I see distributors crowing in Variety over national results, failing to mention that the film is actually struggling outside of the capital cities as we’re not getting anywhere near the saturation media spend. “Australia” is that rare exception when the tables are turned.
It goes without saying I have little sympathy for the large city-based chains like Greater Union who have the proverbial rails run on 98% of films released in this market!
