Too Close For Comfort

At 3 p.m. Monday, the fire had turned away from their Big Bear home, Shirley Jones thankfully reported to me. S

he and husband Marty Ingels had been evacuated from their home along with the other Fawnskin town residents. “The fire came within 50 yards of us,” she said, “the soot is two feet deep.”

Shirley said, “I was so scared and there was only one road out.” It is a favorite getaway home for Jones who bought the home 30 years ago for $68,000 when it was just an A-frame cabin on six acres — now expanded to 7000 square feet and 13 acres. She had just completed taping her hosting for the seven-seg “Great American Movie Musicals” — starting from the ’20s and including her appearances in “Oklahoma!,” “Carousel,” “The Music Man,” “April Love,” etc. (She won her Oscar for the dramatic “Elmer Gantry.”)

Shirley plans to wing to Austin Thursday to perform for a scholarships-for-the-arts benefit. Meanwhile Marty Ingels is working on a film project on the life and times of American Revolutionary period hero Haym Salomon.
