TNT’s ‘Company’ suffers low ratings

Two-thirds of audience were over 50 years-old

TNT’s $40 million, six-hour Cold War thriller “The Company” got off to a disappointing start in its two-hour premiere, managing to draw only 2.89 million viewers, 66.5% of whom were 50 or older.

“Nightmares & Dreamscapes,” TNT’s miniseries a year ago July, drew 43.6% more viewers in its premiere than “The Company,” more than half of them adults 18 to 49. The premiere episode of TNT’s miniseries two years ago, “Into the West,” rounded up 39.5% more viewers than “The Company.” “Into the West,” though, also skewed old; 64% of its viewers were 50-plus, making the show a tough sell on Madison Avenue.

TNT didn’t expect “Company” to attract lots of young viewers because of its subject — a fictionalized history of the CIA during its first 40 years. But even TNT’s demo target of 25- to 54-year-olds didn’t show up. Only 36% of the show’s viewers were 25 to 54.
