JOHANNESBURG — Pubcaster channel SABC1 is looking for fledgling small businesses with big dreams to take part in a new reality skein with an entrepreneurial theme.
In “Kick Start,” nine small companies selected from a cross-section of business sectors in South Africa — “anything from car washes to vegetable stores and online companies” — will compete against each other in a series of challenges over a six-month period, with the winning company to receive prize money of rand 1 million ($142,000).
An SABC1 spokesman says the “fairly young companies” would have to have at least two members to qualify. The selected companies would be housed in a building in Johannesburg, where they would share resources such as receptionists, secretaries and office equipment.
They would be taught skills to enable them to expand and grow their businesses and would take part in various business-related challenges. After six months, the company with the highest profit margin would win.
The selection process for “Kick Start” starts this month, with the show scheduled to start broadcasting weekly on SABC1 June 5.
