The first spinoff format of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” “50-50,” will bow at this fall’s European sales mart Mipcom.
Show adapts the 50-50 lifeline item from “Millionaire,” enabling contestants to compete for a big cash prize and play in pairs as questions are set from two choices.
Dutch-based formats specialist 2waytraffic, which now owns “Millionaire,” has created the new show and claims the game can run weekly or be stripped across schedules.
A pilot is expected to broadcast on Japan’s Fuji channel in November. Greek’s Mega Channel has earmarked “50-50” to bow in fall 2008, while Oz’s Nine Network and Endemol Italy have also secured rights.
“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” created by U.K. indie Celador, became an international sensation when its arrival in Blighty nine years ago rejuvenated the gameshow.
