JOHANNESBURG — M-Net Africa has started filming in Lagos on its first Nigerian soap opera, “Tinsel,” set to premiere on the pan-African pay channel this fall.M-Net Africa, one of satcaster MultiChoice’s DStv offerings, commissioned the Nigerian soap last year as part of its strategy to invest in the country’s entertainment industry and create programming for its West African audience. Other shows developed for the market include gameshow “Temptation Nigeria,” family drama “Edge of Paradise” and “Idols West Africa.”
Fourteen Nigerian interns worked on the sets of M-Net’s two South African soaps, “Egoli” and “Binnelanders,” in February and March to gain experience and skills working on a daily soap in preparation for the start of production of “Tinsel” this month. The soap is produced by Nigeria’s 341 Media, a TV production company helmed by the trio of Jaiye Ojo, Femi Odugbemi and Lemmy Adebule. Producer was selected by M-Net after its open call late last year for pitches for a Nigerian soap. Post-production will take place in Nigeria, with the show initially scheduled to go out three days a week.
M-Net Nigeria general manager Allison Triegaardt said that while the soap had been created as localized content for West Africa, the web hopes it will pull in auds across the continent. MultiChoice Nigeria managing director Collins Khumalo applauded M-Net’s decision to commission the show.
Producers Odugbemi, Ojo and Adebule of 341 Media are staying mum about the plot and cast for now but promised to “entertain viewers across Africa for a long time with a compelling storyline of romance, intrigue and passion in a glamorous world.”
