M-Net launches movie channel

Network takes aim at family demo

JOHANNESBURG — M-Net is launching a movie channel aimed at family audiences next month, to complement its established Movie Magic 1 and 2 channels, both strong brands for the paycaster.

Jan du Plessis, head of M-Net channels, said M-Net Stars would feature a selection of lighter feel-good movies compared with the more adult fare screened on MM1 and 2.

“Market research identified a need for another channel providing entertaining, feel-good movies,” he said. “M-Net Stars will predominantly feature movies suitable for the entire family.”

Du Plessis said the channel would screen contempo classics and ongoing favorites. Comedy would form the backbone of the channel’s line-up, but action and adventure films and big-screen dramas would also feature, with at least one preem a day.

“From time to time there will be movie festivals built around themes, events or favorite movie stars,” he said.

M-Net stars will run 24/7, launching Nov. 1 on DStv’s channel 154.
