The scene stealers

'American Gangster' screens in Hollywood

While “American Gangster” had its big premiere last week in New York at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, the pic had a high-profile industry screening Monday at the ArcLight Cinemas Dome.

Guests who were expecting a low-key event were greeted by a red carpet full of stars such as Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe and Jeremy Piven. Even Mel Gibson made a rare public appearance telling reporters he was there to support his friends Washington, Crowe and helmer Ridley Scott. However, the event went without an after-party.

Also of note was how the ArcLight and Dome were used. Usually the single-screen Dome has been the premiere venue with the ArcLight used for overflow. But with a realization that sound and projection are better in the ArcLight, the stars now traipse through the multiplex to find their seats.
