Film festival etiquette has always dictated that actors and actresses talk exclusively about their films. Sure, starlets and the ever half-baked Bai Ling may pull stunts to lure personal publicity, but seasoned thespians know that discussing any other topic might eclipse the very reason for their appearance: to promote a movie.
So it strikes me as odd and rather uncouth of Angelina Jolie–who is usually very respectful of the plight of directors–to drop the “Me” bomb at Cannes, while promoting A Mighty Heart. She revealed to reporters that she plans to take a year off from acting to care for her children. Fantastic.
Alas, the headline in every newspaper and tabloid this week is about Jolie’s hiatus and not the Mariane Pearl movie. In the future, Jolie should remember that she’s not promoting her life story.
