Elton John's charity raises $2.25 million

NEW YORK — Before entering the Waldorf Astoria ballroom for Elton John’s AIDS Foundation: An Enduring Vision gala on Sept. 25, guests went through airport-like security due to President Bush‘s presence at the hotel.

Event emcee Anderson Cooper said honoree Sharon Osbourne “told me she was stopped by a security guard earlier tonight and asked, ‘Are you here to see the president?’ And she said, ‘No I am here to see the queen.’ “

Benefit, which raised more than $2.25 million, featured a joint performance by Elton John and k.d. lang singing “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word.” On accepting the Osbournes’ award, Sharon said, “(Ozzy and I) are really humbled. In the big picture, we do nothing except support this amazing charity by buying a table every year and having a fuckin’ good time.”
