Sony TV inks deal with Hertz

Showrunner signs on for two years

Sony Pictures Television has inked a two-year overall deal with Tom Hertz, the former “Spin City” showrunner whose CBS laffer “Rules of Engagement” was one of the few comedy success stories of the past season.

Hertz created “Rules,” and serves as showrunner of the Sony-CBS Paramount Network Television-produced comedy. Seven-figure deal calls for him to keep that gig and develop new projects for Sony.

While it aired a reduced number of episodes, “Rules” had a promising first-season run on CBS last spring. Skein proved to be a good fit with lead-in “Two and a Half Men,” retaining a strong percentage of the latter show’s audience.

“Tom has a voice and vision that are just plain funny,” Jamie Erlicht, co-prexy of programming and production at Sony Pictures TV. “He’s a bankable talent.”

In addition to “Spin” and “Rules,” Hertz created the one-season ABC comedy “Married to the Kellys,” which 20th Century Fox TV produced during the 2003-04 season.

Hertz spent five years on “Spin,” serving as exec producer during the final two years, when Charlie Sheen replaced Michael J. Fox. He also had gigs on “The Larry Sanders Show,” Jon Stewart’s 1990s MTV talkshow and “Dennis Miller Live.”
