BERLIN — After years as a leading player in the production and distribution of feature film in Germany, Senator Entertainment is expanding into TV.
Company has purchased a 51% stake in TV production outfit Pro GmbH, which produces a broad gamut of programming, from talk and entertainment formats to series and TV movies.
Established more than two decades ago by media entrepreneur and TV cook Alfred Biolek, company produced regularly for most of Germany’s major broadcasters such as ZDF and Sat 1.
Senator topper Helge Sasse, who got his start working with Biolek at pubcaster ARD in the early 1980s, said Pro GmbH has always served as an example of quality television production and would now be the basis of Senator’s expansion into TV.
Senator expects annual revenue to grow in the two-digit millions as a result of the purchase, details of which were not provided.
Before taking over Senator last year with film producer Marco Weber, Sasse had accumulated plenty of experience on the TV front.
In the early 1990s Sasse helped found the TV production group MME, which was recently taken over by U.K.-based All3Media, as well as music vid channel Viva, which Viacom bought in 2004.
