Out of “The Practice” but not entirely out of practice, McDermott heads back to the primetime Alphabet lineup with “Big Shots” in the role of cosmetics company CEO Duncan Collinsworth.
McDermott, of course, was lead attorney Bobby Donnell for the David E. Kelley skein that won an Emmy for drama series in 1999. He hasn’t been seen all that much on TV since departing the show in 2003.
“(I wanted to do) something lighter in tone, because ‘The Practice’ was really heavy at times,” McDermott explains. “For me, this was a complicated character. The guy was a mess. He doesn’t know. He’s struggling to find out. He’s struggling to evolve. He’s struggling into consciousness. All that stuff was attractive to me.”
As difficult as it is for an actor to find himself squarely in the middle of a single hit, landing a starring role in two ratings-friendly shows is asking a lot. So the question begging to be asked is whether viewers once addicted to “The Practice” will find McDermott equally captivating in “Big Shots”?
Promoting McDermott in marketing materials as a first among equals in a cast that includes Michael Vartan (“Alias”), Christopher Titus (“Titus”) and Joshua Molina (“The West Wing”), ABC is counting on the answer to be yes.
