Christian, gay channels launch

Nature station folds

BERLIN — Nature, wildlife and environmental TV is out, but the Good Book and 24-hour gay content are in.

Nature and wildlife channel Terra Nova will be pulling the plug July 10, to be replaced by Christian outlet Bibel-TV.

Terra Nova’s management said financial difficulties had forced the shutdown. The web was launched by France’s AB Groupe in 2004 as Germany’s first channel devoted to nature and environmental content.

Bibel-TV, meanwhile, is celebrating five years on satellite and digital and will replace Terra Nova on cable. The web is largely financed through viewer donations and is owned by a Protestant-Catholic shareholder group.

Meanwhile, the recently launched Berlin-based media company Deutsche Fernsehwerke (DFW) is set to start Timm, its 24-hour gay free-TV channel, this fall.

The web will target a gay male demo and carry films, series, sitcoms, documentaries, talkshows and news programs, including in-house productions.

Cliches and stereotypes, however, will have no place on the channel, said DFW topper Frank Lukas. “Timm stands for the plurality of lifestyles.”

Lukas is planning to launch the channel via satellite, cable and IPTV and offer programming windows on analog cable.
