Sad to say, Meredith MacRae died July 14, 2000, “after three surgeries with the best surgeons,” her mother Sheila (83) recalls to me. Sheila lives in the same New York building as her other daughter, Heather MacRae, who can be seen (and heard) in her nitery act, “Songs For My Father, Gordon.” They include numbers from “Carousel,” “Oklahoma!” and “West Side Story.” Sheila tells me, “Heather sings just like her father.” She costars in Harvey Fierstein’s “A Catered Affair,” which preemed in San Diego and is about to acquire changes in N.Y. rehearsals. It bows at the Walter Kerr Theater on B’way in Feb. Sheila, who was Alice Kramden to Jackie Gleason’s Ralph for six years, also traveled with Bob Hope to “hundreds” of service sites. And she now performs her one-woman show with impressions including Lena Horne, Carol Channing, Keely Smith and Katharine Hepburn. “I’m thinking of going to Vegas,” she tells me. CBS and HBO are talking TVersions of her book, “Hollywood Mother of the Year” (Viking).
