A largely introspective work filled with the influence of ’70s singer-songwriters and the era’s production styles, Harper has maintained the tenor of his last disc, 2006’s “Both Sides of the Gun.” Opener “Fight Outta You,” a groove-based call for perseverance, sets a mellow easy-going tone for the disk that is broken up by only one aggressive rock number, “Needed You Tonight.” No surprises here as Harper mines a distinctive blend of gospel inflections, Neil Young-style acoustic guitar and harmonica, and a convivial spirit . “Fool For a Lonesome Train” and the upbeat “Say You Will are triple-A radio hits in the waiting.
