Federici leaves Springsteen’s band

Long-time organist to undergo melanoma treatment

Danny Federici, the long-time organist and original member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, will be leaving the group immediately to undergo treatment for melanoma.

Springsteen and the E Street Band are currently in tour in support of its “Magic” release, which was released October and reached No. 1 in the charts.

A native of Flemington, N.J., Federici, 57, has been playing with Springsteen since the 1960s in bands such as Child and Steel Mill, the latter eventually transforming into the E Street Band.

Charles Giordano, who played with Springsteen during his Seeger Session Tour in 2006, will replace Federici as the band begins its European leg of the current tour Sunday night in Madrid. They return to the United States on Feb. 28 in Hartford, Ct.

“Danny is one of the pillars of our sound and has played beside me as a great friend for more than 40 years. We all eagerly await his healthy and speedy return,” Springsteen said in a press release.

There was speculation for weeks that Federici was in ill health. Talk among the band’s fan base was fueled this past Sunday when, at the conclusion of the band’s show in Boston, the group gathered around Federici in support. He left the stage in tears.
