Jeff Jones is ankling the catalog division of Sony BMG to take over Beatles company Apple Corps.
Jones, exec veep of the Legacy division of Sony BMG, takes over as CEO at Apple Corps from Neil Aspinall, who has worked for the Fab Four for more than 40 years. Aspinall began as the band’s road manager and graduated to head up their Apple record company.
Jones has been exec VP, Legacy Recordings, since late 2004 and had been with the department since 1998. Prior to that, he was senior VP for jazz at Columbia Records for four years. He has held marketing posts at Elektra, MCA and Polygram. Among his successes have been campaigns for catalog items from Miles Davis, Bob Dylan and AC/DC plus the “Ken Burns Jazz” series.
Music industry observers responded positively to the Jones appointment. The next big step for the Beatles’ repertoire will be its exploitation online.
